Kothic

Kothic is a language I’m developing for me to be spoken by me. A natural-sounding speech that keeps itself more regular than the tongues of the real world.

… It’s also named after me.

Introduction to Kothic

What the HELL is Kothic?

Apart from the design principles touched upon above, Kothic is also intended to be simple and neutral. Simple in that overly convoluted grammar for the sake of grammar is avoided, and neutral in that the vocabulary is constructed from scratch. Despite these lofty goals, however, Kothic is above all an endeavour of fun and learning and if something doesn’t feel right I fully intend on altering it to suit my personal aesthetics.

Why make a new language?

Because fuck you, that’s why. I’m not developing Kothic to be used in reality or in a fantasy world. It is merely a personal project; an experiment in linguistics. I have no expectations of anyone ever speaking it one day. I predict its form will change dramatically over its development period (perhaps even being entirely remade if the situation calls for it), but in the end I plan for it to become something of a standard template for any future language construction projects. It can be considered on par with Latin or Sanskrit; child languages may develop from it (even mingling with other languages), but it is the classic form. A standard and perfected base from which future inspiration and borrowings can take place. In essence, it is the first of an entirely new language family!

Where can I learn more?

I’ll update this page as the language grows and takes shape. There aren’t many solid examples I can give yet, but I plan on publishing a comprehensive guide to the language when it’s ready. In the meantime, you can view Kothic in its current draft form on Google Drive as I work on it. Nothing you see there is to be considered canon, but it’ll give you a good idea of the direction the language is heading in.

The Litany Against Fear

English
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing… only I will remain.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing… only I will remain.
